Here, that hardship is portrayed as the apocalypse. Wayne’s collaboration with Nicki Minaj on “Dark Side of the Moon” is one of those songs with both musicians being there for each other in the face of great hardship. Sure, you got your requisite party raps, but Wayne does feel like he’s shooting for something more serious and intimate. What I especially dig about Tha Carter V is the album’s more somber tone that a lot of the tracks take.
It’s funny, brutal, theatrical, and features some great verses from Wayne and Kendrick. Basically, Liz helps set up her boyfriend for Wayne to rob him, but the whole thing feels like a 2018 (or is it 2014) version of “Trapped In The Closet”. On “Mona Lisa”, we get an interesting narrative involving Wayne, a woman named Liz, and Kendrick playing multiple characters. There’s filler, okay.īut songs like Lil Wayne and Kendrick’s team-up on “Mona Lisa” propel this record from a merely average release to one that’s not great but rather just below it. Did I mention this is 23 tracks in length and almost 90 minutes long. Not naming any of those names though however, they’re likely on Tha Carter V‘s least memorable songs. The rest are serviceable if not just a little less memorable to completely forgettable. Out of all of those guests, I enjoy Kendrick, Nicki, Travis, and yes, even XXXTentacion’s appearances. However, he plays to his strengths on this album while picking up a who’s who of guests including: Kendrick Lamar, Nicki Minaj, Snoop Dogg, Ashanti ( really?), Travis Scott, and the recently deceased XXXTentacion. Even at a gargantuan 23 tracks in length, this is probably the best Lil Wayne record in sometime.īut why? We know Lil Wayne is no longer the Lil Wayne of Tha Cater III, the very pinnacle of his popularity. Tha Carter V biggest achievement (even with some songs being outdated) is that it’s actually really good. What I’m saying is that he’s got momentum. People are finally talking about him again (and in a positive way). You got to think that with Lil Wayne now being a new label, he’s got some ideas cooking. This album has been supposedly sitting on the shelf for four years. Could it be the last album from Lil Wayne as he hinted previously.
What’s most important is that Tha Carter V is finally here. I don’t want to get into all the legal disputes and reasons for the various delays. Seems like there’s always an issue with Lil Wayne releasing his different chapters of Tha Carter. And, just because no R&B single is complete these days without a rap superstar verse, Lil Wayne drops off a solid verse that punnily references Ca$hin Out: “ I’m riding with a girl named Keyshia.” Personally, I can’t wait to watch Cole’s comeback come full circle with the release of a new album Woman To Woman, so far scheduled to drop by the end of the year. For her part Keyshia obviously hasn’t lost a note, delivering exactly the kind of woman scorned vocals that first earned her deserved acclaim. Harmony (aka H-Money) comes through on the production end of the equation, crafting a beat that’s equal parts tough and beautiful, somehow combining a grinding bass line with soaring strings. Right? No matter what you call it, just call it her new single Enough Of No Love.
Considering that, aside from one essentially random release, it’s been more than three years since we’ve truly heard new material from Keyshia Cole, I think we can call this a comeback.
